Napoli Snap Fernando Llorente For Free

Free agent Fernando Llorente has joined Italian Serie A side Napoli on a two-year contract.

Llorente has spent the last two seasons in North London with Tottenham Hotspurs but left the club after his contract expired at the end of last season.

Llorente played a pivotal role as Mauricio Pochettino’s side made it all the way to the final of last season’s UEFA Champions League, including scoring the controversial goal against Manchester City that booked their place in the semi-finals.

However, Llorente’s time at Tottenham was spent mainly playing as second fiddle to Harry Kane and he managed just two goals in the Premier League for the club.

The 34-year-old’s switch to Napoli marks a return to Italy, where he spent two seasons at Juventus between 2013 and 2015, scoring 23 goals in 66 games to help the Old Lady to two Serie A titles.

Llorente will be hoping to help Carlo Ancelotti’s side break Juventus’ eight-year monopoly of the Serie A, having finished in second place in each of the last three seasons.

Napoli have begun the 2019/2020 season with a win and a loss in their first two league games, winning 4-3 away to Fiorentina before losing to Juventus by the same scoreline last Saturday.

Llorente’s arrival might signal the end to Napoli’s pursuit of Mauro Icardi, who has been told he can leave Inter Milan.

Llorente has 24 caps for the Spanish national team and was part of the sides that won the FIFA World Cup and European Championships in 2010 and 2012 respectively.
